防护等级：是指外壳防止外物落入内部和防止水浸入内部的能力。外壳具有相应的防护等级对保持防爆电机的防爆安全性能是十分重要的。外壳的防护等级用IP代码和后续的两位数字表示。
数字的第1位表示防外物等级，数字的第2位表示防水等级。GB208将外壳的防外物等级分为6个级别，防水等级分为8个级别。
例如：BEP56-4K防爆配电箱的防护等级为IP55，第1个5表示防尘等级为5级（不能完全防止粉尘浸入，但是，进入的粉尘量不得影响电机的正常运行，不得影响安全）；第2个5表示防水等级为5级（向外壳各个方向喷水时，喷水不应该对电机产生有害的影响）。
